We’re Proud to Be Named Sustainable Business of the Year! 🌱

We’re thrilled to share that The National Self Build & Renovation Centre has been awarded ‘Sustainable Business of the Year’ at the 2025 TBE (The Business Exchange) Awards!

The awards evening took place right here at our own venue in Swindon - using our spacious and unique setting to celebrate the incredible achievements of local businesses across Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and Somerset.

Sponsored by Thrings, this year’s TBE Awards shone a spotlight on the region’s most innovative and community-minded organisations. Guests enjoyed a buzzing VIP Drinks Reception hosted by N3 Display Graphics, explored the TBE Innovation Boulevard, and watched local artists Judy and Morgan Guillery create a live mural to commemorate the evening.

We were proud to stand alongside inspiring finalists - Canned Wine Group, Grant UK, and Deceuninck - each doing fantastic work to drive sustainability in their respective industries. Thank you to SETsquared Bath who sponsored this award category.

Since opening our doors in 2007, more than a quarter of a million visitors have used our visitor Centre to help them create Better Sustainable Homes. However, we also recognise that running our own business has an environmental impact - and we’re determined to minimise it.

Over the past three years, here are some of the key improvements we’ve made:
🌍 Reduced our CO₂ emissions by 23% and cut waste to landfill by 17%.
💡 Installed LED lighting throughout our 67,000ft² Centre.
🔌 Upgraded to eight 22kW smart EV charging points.
🚗 Introduced a salary sacrifice Electric Vehicle scheme, with EVs now making up 54% of commute mileage.
🤝 Adopted sustainable procurement policies, prioritising local and eco-friendly suppliers.

🏡 Continued to develop and improve our offerings, including two brand-new Workshops, as well as investing a 6-figure sum to develop our latest educational resource - the ‘Retrofit Zone’, helping people to build and improve properties more sustainably.

You can read more in our first Annual Sustainability Report, published in June 2025.

Over the last year, we achieved two major milestones: Good Business Charter Accreditation and B Corporation (B Corp) Certification.

Becoming a Certified B Corp was a year-long process that tested every aspect of our operation - from our governance and community impact to our environmental performance. We’re proud to be one of the first 3,000 Certified B Corps in the UK, with an impressive B Impact Assessment score of 124.7.

Winning the Sustainable Business of the Year award recognises the collective efforts of our Employee Owners, our partners, and our visitors - all working together to promote sustainable homebuilding. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and we’ll continue to inform, inspire and offer impartial advice, helping people build better homes in the years to come.

Meet the Team: Career Journeys at the NSBRC

The following blog was written by Evie Pearce, work experience student, during her time with the NSBRC team. This reflects the research and effort they put into their placement, and we're pleased to share it with you.

In this blog, I will be asking five of The NSBRC’s team members various questions about their careers and the rewards they get from them, their journey to get to where they are now, the advice they would give to younger individuals and what they would be doing if they weren’t working in the job titles they have now.
