Move or Renovate? Harvey Fremlin weighs in on BBC Radio 4’s Money Box Live

If your current home no longer suits your needs, should you move - or improve? It’s a dilemma millions face, and Money Box Live on BBC Radio 4 tackled the issue in its latest episode (first broadcast on May 7, 2025).

Felicity Hannah was joined by key voices in the property and renovation space, including Harvey Fremlin, Managing Director of The National Self Build & Renovation Centre. Using his insight into the self build & renovation industry, Harvey offered guidance for homeowners grappling with this decision.

He highlighted that while moving house comes with high costs; think Stamp Duty, solicitor fees, and rising property prices - renovation can be a cost-effective alternative for those craving more space or functionality. However, Harvey didn’t shy away from the risks. He stressed the importance of thorough planning, realistic budgeting, and seeking expert advice before beginning any major work. Renovating your home can be transformative, he explains, but only if it’s done with a clear plan and professional support.

As insurance firm Aviva predicts 7 million of us will renovate in the next two years - spending an average of £14,000 each - Harvey’s practical perspective is more relevant than ever. From self build projects to clever upgrades, he emphasised that improving doesn’t just add value to a home - it can dramatically improve how you live in it.

Beth Rudolf from the Conveyancing Association also joined the discussion, offering her legal expertise on the hidden costs and hurdles of moving.

Whether you're eyeing a new postcode or just an extra bedroom, this episode is a must-listen for anyone trying to decide between selling up or starting a new project at home.
